Motion Detector Night Lights

One of the things the books tell you is that your Dementia patient will start to wander. Sometimes during the day and other times at night. As with most older folks, eyesight becomes an issue which increases the chance of your night wanderer falling.

One of the benefits of the modern home is all of those LED lights. On your TV, on your stove and microwave, digital clocks, the list goes on. They all help to light your home. but there are still shadowed places that can still trip up even the most sure footed.

As a way to prep my house, I found these awesome little Motion Detector Night Lights that turn on when motion is detected.

I’ve put them at the foot of Jim’s side of the bed, in both of our bathrooms and another in the kitchen. These particular ones turn on at the first sign of movement and turn off after 30 seconds of inactivity. The motion detector is very sensitive. I’ve tried to move around the room without it turning on the light and I have to move in super slow motion for it to miss my motion.

They work like a charm. Every time Jim sits up the night light pops on and illuminates his slippers to make it easier for him to find. Then it lights his way to the ensuite bathroom where the next light takes over as soon as it senses movement. Added bonus, it is light enough to allow Jim to see without having to turn on the overhead light, which would wake me. (At least for now it’s a bonus since he just goes to the bathroom during a few times overnight)

Eventually I’ll have to plug in more of them and maybe even install the Amazon Flex Motion Detectors to alert me when Jim starts roaming upstairs. Maybe even set up a baby gate at the top of the stairs to prevent him falling down them. Things to ponder another day.
