Fewer Hands Make More Work

Jim’s decline seemed to have stabilized fromĀ  last August to the beginning of March. Since then I’m noticing a steady stream of tasks that used to be habit but now he forgets.

Every afternoon, he used to prep coffee for the following day. He remembers on average 2-3 times a week now. same with setting the table for supper.

He used to haunt the dishwasher, waiting for it to fill up enough to run and then immediately empty it before the plates had cooled. Sure I’d have to play “Where’d he put the casserole dish or the spatula” but at least it was done. I can’t tell you the last time he ran it.

By Wednesday, he used to start fretting about which garbage bins to put out for the Friday pick-up. Then he started putting the garbage bins out without emptying the trash, organics and recycling cans in the kitchen/bathrooms. Today, he hadn’t even put the garbage bins out.

I’ve had to remind him to do his laundry for the past few weeks. Not a big deal because I can put his in with mine but as with all of the chores, they break up his week and gives him something to do.

I don’t mind doing all of the chores, but housework is my least favourite thing and I definitely miss the extra set of hands.
